By popular demand, the critically-acclaimed spoken word artist Helena D. Lewis returned to New York City with her hit one-woman show JUST ME for a special two-night engagement at the new poetic hotspot, Bowery Poetry Club. JUST ME, which premiered last February at the Here Arts Center as part of the Downtown Urban Theater Festival, exposed Helena's remarkable theatrical talent and raw emotions in a play about her day-to-day encounters with family, friends, prostitutes, co-workers, men and the dramedy that ensues.

The three-hour festival was hosted by Ebony Washington (Supreme Poets) and Nathan P. (Nuyorican Poets Cafe). Thirty poets were featured including Aileen Cho, Vicki Hudspith, Helena D. Lewis, Emanuel Xavier, Jackie Sheeler, Tantra, Jane LeCroy, Justina, Leslie Duprey, Rashida, Ryn Gargulinski, David Mills, Karen Jaime, Clara Sala, Jennifer You, Dawn, Jason Roberts, Jennifer Cendana Armas and Osagyefo as well as special guest poets from Youth Speaks and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.

A Tragedy in South Central

A Tragedy in South Central, a new musical and contemporary interpretation of the classics Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story, had its New York City premiere at the Cafe. This important off-Broadway musical illustrated the confrontations faced by today's urban youth and featured jazz and urban contemporary songs and dazziling dance performances. Questionable Quest

The Island Children's Musical Theatre, a company of young students from Puerto Rico's Palmas Academy, traveled to NYC to present the U.S. premiere of Questionable Quest, an original musical composed by 12 year old William Fox. Produced by Manny Fox of the famed 1981 Tony-nominated Broadway musical, Sophisticated Ladies, QUESTIONABLE QUEST featured a 38-member all-Palmas Academy cast and a 14-piece salsa orchestra comprised of some of Puerto Rico's finest musicians. It is a medieval tale about a serf and a princess that somehow end up in NYC 2000.

CONCEPT, an international urban party/mini-concert/benefit, premiered at the world-renowned Soundfactory with hundreds of fans, celebrities, media and fashion and music industry representatives. The showcase featured award-winning DJ Swing from London, R&B vocal group Amari and spoken word artists Sarah Jones (Surface Transit) and Mums (HBO's Oz.) The event established the Creative Ammo Fund (R), an anti-violence youth initiative that will support teenagers and young adults in their pursuit of creative careers in the fashion and advertising industries.
